HierarchY Study
Communications | Visualization | Individual
Given a list of words of the same typeface and point size, how can simple actions such as grouping the words, adding colour, adding imagery, changing stroke, changing point sizes affect the way a message is communicated? How do the connotations of the word affect the design? In order to convey the image of Kronos Quartet, I created album covers that communicate the musicians.
Process
Chunking
Given a list of words of the same typeface and point size, I first assigned different stroke weights in order to give levels of hierarchy. Similarly, line spacing, two tab shifts, and three tab shifts were implemented in order to see how chunking words gives meaning to the words through grouping. Words that seemed to belong together chunked together.
Layout, Colour, Image Addition
Afterwards, the text was arranged to fit four album covers. These arrangements were just the beginning steps to see how the space is laid out. Next, colour was added in order to see how colour communicates a mood and how contrast plays in the tone as well. Images, that I thought represented the music, were found on the web.
Album Translation
The images were then combined with the previously created layouts. However, with the images, the layouts did not really work well. In order to look more dynamic, I wanted to connect the numbers with the text. However, one feedback that I received was that usually larger point sizes are used by younger people in order to make a statement. More established people use subtle and small point sizes. With this in mind, I combined landscape imagery that looked like sound waves with more subtle type.
Iterations
My final image choice attempts to represent the musician featured. Each album highlights musicians. These musicians each have a particular style which gives them their identity. I attempted to demonstrate the connection of a name and the idea of a human figure through abstract portraitures. Subtle text was still implemented in the final iterations.
